Party defectors never become Nigeria’s President – Reno Omokri

Must read

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has asserted that no Nigerian politician who frequently switches parties has ever risen to the presidency.

In a social media post on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, Omokri emphasized that political consistency plays a key role in national stability.

He argued that Nigeria’s diverse political system requires leaders with firm party affiliations, as constant defections signal unpredictability.

“For sixty-five years since Nigeria gained independence, no politician who has repeatedly changed parties has ever become president,” he stated, citing historical patterns.

Omokri pointed out that past leaders such as Tafawa Balewa, Shehu Shagari, Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Yar’Adua, and Goodluck Jonathan remained loyal to their political parties throughout their careers.

While acknowledging that Muhammadu Buhari transitioned from ANPP to CPC before merging into APC, he described it as a structured political evolution rather than random party-switching.

Similarly, he noted that Bola Tinubu’s journey from AD to ACN and later APC followed an organic growth process.

He warned that frequent defections weaken democracy and contribute to voter apathy, stressing that Nigeria’s political landscape requires stability.

“A politically stable leader can unify the nation, while those who jump from party to party only promote apathy and disorder,” Omokri concluded.
