Immigration officer arraigned for salary fraud across multiple govt agencies

An Assistant Superintendent of Immigration, Abubakar Mohammed Aseku, has been brought before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Apo, Abuja, over allegations of illegally receiving salaries from multiple government agencies while serving in the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) arraigned Aseku on Tuesday before Justice Binta Dogonyaro on a nine-count charge, which includes abuse of office and corruption.

According to the ICPC, Aseku allegedly collected N4.2 million in salaries from the Nasarawa State Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology in 2015 while simultaneously employed as an NIS officer.

He is also accused of receiving N13.4 million in salaries from the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) between 2018 and 2019 while still working with the NIS.

Furthermore, in his role as a Pay Officer at the NIS, Aseku allegedly authorized the disbursement of N4.7 million in salaries to seven individuals who were not employed by the service.

One of the charges against him states that between October 2018 and October 2019, he unlawfully benefited from his dual employment by collecting over N13.4 million from the DPR while still serving as an immigration officer, violating Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

Aseku pleaded not guilty to all charges. His lawyer, Basil Hemba, requested that the court uphold the bail conditions previously granted by another FCT High Court in Maitama. Justice Dogonyaro agreed to maintain the existing bail terms.

The ICPC’s counsel, Michael Adesola, sought an adjournment to allow the prosecution to present its witnesses. The case was subsequently adjourned to April 29, 2025, for further hearing.
