The National Industrial Court in Abuja has set March 17, 2025, to deliver its ruling on a lawsuit filed by over 400 police officers who claim they were unlawfully retired from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
The affected officers, from Courses 18, 19, and 20 of the Police Academy, initiated the case through eight representatives: ACP Chinedu Emengaha, ACP Victor Chilaka, ACP Egwu Otu, CSP Sylvester Ebosele, CSP Sunday Okuguni, CSP Asuquo Inyang, CSP Kalu Chikozie, and CSP Adetu Omoteso.
They argued that their retirement was illegal, as it did not follow due process and they had not yet reached the mandatory retirement age.
The Police Service Commission (PSC), the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the Force Secretary are listed as defendants in the case.
During the court proceedings, the claimants’ counsel, Chief Goddy Uche (SAN), expressed concern that while the case was still pending, some of the officers had their ranks downgraded before being forced into retirement.
He also noted that the IGP and the Force Secretary failed to provide legal representation in court.
Justice R. Haastrup, who was expected to deliver the ruling, informed the parties that the judgment was not ready and adjourned the case to March 17.
