SDP in fresh crisis as chairman denounces planned congress

Must read

The Kogi State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is grappling with internal strife as its chairman, Moses Peter Oricha, has dismissed an upcoming congress allegedly being organized by certain individuals claiming party membership.

In a statement released on Monday, Oricha called on the public, security agencies, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disregard the supposed gathering, reportedly scheduled for March 12, 2025.

Expressing his concerns, Oricha described the organizers as “faceless individuals” acting on behalf of external forces to destabilize the party.

He labelled their actions as both “laughable and criminal,” asserting that they lacked legitimate recognition within the SDP.

“This so-called congress is nothing but a sham. The general public should not take these unknown figures seriously, as their actions hold no weight within the Kogi SDP,” he stated.

Oricha revealed that he had formally notified INEC, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, urging them to disregard and prevent the event.

He emphasized that the current state executive, elected in April 2022, remains valid, and the next congress is not due until April 2026, as stipulated in the party’s constitution.

Reaffirming his leadership, he urged SDP members to ignore what he described as the antics of “disgruntled elements” seeking to disrupt the party’s stability.

The development highlights growing tensions within the Kogi SDP as internal leadership struggles threaten to overshadow the party’s political agenda.
