Reps orders NCC to restrict pornographic websites in Nigeria

The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block access to pornographic websites nationwide.

This decision came after a motion by Dalhatu Tafaki, a lawmaker from Katsina State, who raised concerns about the negative impact of unrestricted access to explicit content on societal and moral values.

Tafaki cited warnings from psychologists and sociologists, emphasizing that many young Nigerians have developed an addiction to such content, which could have serious psychological and social consequences. He also noted that several countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia have implemented similar restrictions.

“Experts around the world have highlighted the psychological, social, and mental harm associated with consuming pornographic material,” he stated.

After a voice vote approved by the Speaker, the House agreed that limiting access to such content would help protect Nigerians, particularly young people.

The lawmakers further instructed the NCC to ensure that telecommunication companies comply with the directive and to impose penalties on any providers that fail to enforce the restrictions.
