Labour Party forms committee to resolve dispute with lawmakers

Must read

The Labour Party has set up a three-member committee to address the ongoing tensions between some of its National Assembly lawmakers and the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure.

This was announced on Tuesday in a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in Abuja.

The reconciliation committee is chaired by Ben Etanabene, with Mathew Nworgu and Chinedu Obika serving as members.

Disagreements between Abure and several lawmakers have persisted since last year, following the controversial Anambra convention that reaffirmed his leadership. The situation has been further complicated by internal power struggles involving associates of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.

While inaugurating the committee, Abure tasked the members with engaging the lawmakers, addressing their concerns, and restoring communication and unity within the party.

“We have assigned you the crucial responsibility of reconciling our members in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. It is important that all 40 of you align with the party leadership,” he stated.

“You represent the Labour Party at the National Assembly, and we acknowledge the commitment many of you have shown. However, there are still issues that need resolution. We expect you to complete this task and report back within two weeks. The party remains dedicated to achieving lasting peace, particularly with key stakeholders like the NASS caucus.”

In response, the committee members pledged their commitment to the party and assured that they would carry out the assignment diligently.
