JUST IN: ECOWAS deploys standby force to combat terrorism, cross-border crimes

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has activated its Standby Force to address the rising threats of terrorism and transborder crimes across the region.

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, made this announcement on Tuesday during the 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff, held in Abuja.

He emphasized the urgent need for a coordinated military response to combat security challenges that threaten peace and stability in West Africa.

Badaru noted that terrorism, banditry, and organized crime have continued to destabilize several countries in the region, making it necessary for ECOWAS to take decisive action.

He stressed that the deployment of the Standby Force would enhance regional security cooperation and strengthen collective efforts to tackle insecurity.

The activation of the force aligns with ECOWAS’ broader strategy to reinforce security architecture and ensure swift military intervention where necessary.

Badaru also called for sustained collaboration among member states to effectively execute counter-terrorism operations and safeguard the region from external threats.

The meeting brought together top military officials from across ECOWAS nations, underscoring the commitment to regional security and stability.
