Federal University Lokoja reopens after three-week closure over protests

Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has resumed academic activities after being shut down for three weeks due to student protests.

Recall that AFRIPOST had reported that the citadel of learning was shut following students unrest.

However, in a statement issued on Monday in Lokoja, the university’s registrar and secretary to the council, Rebecca Okojie, announced that the institution would reopen on Tuesday, March 11, with lectures set to begin on Monday, March 17.

She explained that the decision followed an emergency Senate meeting held on March 10, during which the reopening was approved.

“The Senate has given approval for the university to resume operations from Tuesday, March 11. This follows ongoing efforts and consultations to address the issues that led to road accidents, which claimed the lives of five students and left others seriously injured,” she stated.

The university had initially been shut down after students threatened to block the Abuja-Lokoja highway in protest over a truck accident that resulted in the deaths of their fellow students.

“After the tragic incident, students barricaded the university gates despite interventions from the state government and appeals from the university management for calm.

“Following advice from security agencies and in an effort to prevent further loss of life, the Vice-Chancellor, in consultation with the university management, took the decision to indefinitely shut down the institution on February 20,” Ms. Okojie had previously explained.
