Resign or face impeachment – Rivers APC chairman to Gov Fubara

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to either step down from office or face impeachment proceedings.

Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Monday, Okocha criticized Fubara’s decision to invite pro-Wike lawmakers from the Rivers State House of Assembly for a meeting, describing it as a deceptive gesture.

The invitation came after a 48-hour ultimatum given to the governor to present the 2025 budget had expired.

The lawmakers, who are loyal to Fubara’s estranged political ally, had earlier demanded the dismissal of commissioners and board members who had not been screened by the assembly. They had also summoned the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

In a letter dated March 9, signed by Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, and addressed to Speaker Mathew Amaewhule, Fubara indicated his willingness to engage with the legislators.

The proposed agenda for the meeting included discussions on securing an appropriate venue for legislative sittings, settling outstanding allowances, and presenting the state budget.

However, the recent Supreme Court ruling, which was expected to resolve the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, has instead escalated tensions, with both factions interpreting the judgment to their advantage.

Okocha accused the governor of undermining the rule of law and insisted that Fubara had only two choices: resignation or impeachment.

“The invitation to the lawmakers is a Greek gift. The Supreme Court’s judgment is final, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The only path left for the governor is to resign or be removed from office,” Okocha declared.
