Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and human rights lawyer Femi Falana has criticized the Nigerian Senate for suspending Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over alleged misconduct, calling the decision unlawful.
In a statement on Sunday, Falana described the suspension as “the height of legislative recklessness.”
He emphasized that the judiciary, particularly the Court of Appeal, has ruled against the suspension of lawmakers by the National Assembly’s leadership.
“With the pronouncement made by the courts, especially the Appeal Court, the suspension of the Kogi lawmaker is illegal,” he stated.
Falana urged the Senate to lift the suspension immediately to prevent further embarrassment to the legislative body.
He also referenced a previous court ruling that prohibited the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges from proceeding with its inquiry into Akpoti-Uduaghan’s case.
“The Federal High Court had restrained the Senate Ethics Committee from hearing the complaint against the embattled senator pending the determination of the motion on notice.
“The Senate ought to have stayed action in accordance with the rule of law,” Falana asserted.
