A clash involving operatives of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) resulted in the death of a suspected smuggler and injuries to two others, sparking violent protests in Igbeme Village, Ogun State.

According to intelligence sources, the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on March 9, 2025, when Customs officers fired at a group suspected of smuggling foreign parboiled rice from the Benin Republic into Nigeria using motorcycles.

One of the alleged smugglers, identified as Bidemi Ogunola, also known as Ofe, was killed, while two others sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital for medical attention.

In response to the shooting, enraged youths in the community launched attacks on Customs and other security posts, setting several structures on fire.
