As Nigeria marks International Women’s Day 2025, experts are stressing the importance of enhancing data inclusion for women, emphasizing its role in economic development, governance, and social progress.
Digital governance specialist Dr. Gabriel Akinremi has urged targeted efforts to close the gender gap in data accessibility and usage.
He pointed out that numerous Nigerian women remain excluded from the digital economy due to societal norms, limited digital skills, and restricted internet access.
“Data is a crucial asset for decision-making and economic empowerment, yet many women in Nigeria are unable to leverage its benefits,” Akinremi remarked.
He highlighted that inclusive data policies enable women to access financial services, improve social welfare, and have a stronger voice in governance.
However, obstacles such as digital illiteracy, cultural limitations, and concerns over data privacy continue to slow progress.
“A lack of access to smartphones and stable internet connections prevents many women from fully engaging in digital opportunities,” he explained.
“Additionally, issues like online harassment and data security fears discourage women from using digital platforms.”
Despite the introduction of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) in 2019, Akinremi noted that enforcement challenges and limited public awareness have hindered its effectiveness in safeguarding women’s digital rights.
To improve the situation, he suggested expanding digital literacy initiatives for women, strengthening legal frameworks, and ensuring policies address gender-specific data concerns.
He also called for collaboration between government bodies, private sector players, and civil society groups to promote responsible data practices and increase women’s participation in the digital economy.
“As Nigeria advances in the digital space, ensuring women are not left behind is essential. With proper policies and safeguards, women can fully benefit from the digital economy while maintaining their privacy and security,” Akinremi concluded.
