The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has apprehended a prime suspect linked to the killing of Brigadier General Uwen Harold Udokwere, who was assassinated at his residence in Lokogoma, Abuja, on June 22, 2024.
Sources familiar with the investigation told Zagazola Makama that 18-year-old Alkasim Mohammed was arrested alongside his accomplice, 22-year-old Suleiman Abdullahi, during a coordinated raid by the Scorpion Squad in Durumi Phase 2, Abuja.
During the operation, police recovered a Beretta pistol with serial number 58866 and eleven rounds of 9mm live ammunition.
“Under interrogation, the suspects admitted to being part of a notorious gang responsible for multiple high-profile crimes in the FCT, including the murder of Brigadier General Udokwere.
The retired senior military officer was fatally shot in his home by armed robbers who gained entry by scaling the fence,” an intelligence source revealed.
The suspects also confessed to the murder of Alhaji Auwal Abdullahi, a Bureau De Change operator, on March 7, 2024, in Room 303, Rita Lori Hotel, Garki.
The same pistol recovered from them was allegedly used in the robbery of a POS operator, Miss Mercy Alo, at her Jabi shop, where ₦700,000 was stolen. Additionally, the gang reportedly shot a customer, Daniel Inalegwu, in the lower thigh before fleeing.
Further intelligence suggests that the criminal syndicate was involved in numerous home invasions, carjackings, and abductions across Abuja and neighbouring states.
Security operatives are now intensifying efforts to apprehend other members of the gang and recover more hidden weapons.
“We have solid leads on the remaining suspects, and this arrest marks a significant breakthrough in tackling violent crime in the FCT,” the source added.
The suspects remain in police custody and will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
