A fatal accident on the Umuahia-Enugu Expressway has claimed four lives and left 14 others injured, according to the Abia Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The Sector Commander, Ngozi Ezeoma, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, revealing that the crash occurred on Friday at 2:01 p.m. near the Ohiya Mechanic area.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was caused by a burst tyre and excessive speed, leading to the vehicle somersaulting multiple times.
The vehicle involved was a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus operated by the Ebonyi Transport Corporation.
The crash affected 18 people—11 men and seven women. One female victim died at the scene, while the remaining 17 passengers were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia. Unfortunately, two men and another woman later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, bringing the death toll to four.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery, the sector commander emphasized the need for road users to adhere to safety regulations.
She also reassured the public of the FRSC’s commitment to ensuring safer roads.
