President Bola Tinubu has appointed former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, as Special Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reform initiative.

The appointment, announced on Friday in a statement by the president’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, is aimed at advancing reforms in the livestock sector and supporting national development efforts.

Jega, who previously served as vice chancellor of Bayero University, co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Committee alongside Tinubu.

The committee put forward several recommendations for sustainable livestock reforms, including the establishment of a dedicated Livestock Ministry, which has since been created.

At 68, Jega holds several leadership roles, including serving as a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and as the pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council at Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano. He also led INEC from 2010 to 2015.

Onanuga emphasized that Jega’s new role as special adviser will help sustain the momentum of the ongoing livestock reforms and ensure the successful implementation of the committee’s recommendations.
