Power Minister condemns NAF attack on Ikeja DisCo, calls for restraint

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has strongly condemned the recent attack by Nigerian Air Force personnel on the headquarters and facilities of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), which left several people injured and resulted in the destruction of equipment.

In a statement issued by his special adviser on strategic communications, Bolaji Tunji, the minister expressed deep concern over the incident, stressing that there are proper democratic channels for resolving disputes rather than resorting to violence.

Adelabu described the assault on Ikeja Electric, a critical power distribution company, as unfortunate and a threat to national development.

He emphasized that the power sector is essential to the economy, and any attack on its infrastructure directly impacts the well-being of citizens.

“The facilities of Ikeja Electric serve millions of Nigerians, including homes, hospitals, schools, industries, and even military installations. Any disruption to its operations undermines our collective goal of achieving stable and uninterrupted power supply,” the minister stated.

While acknowledging that grievances may arise, Adelabu maintained that destroying public infrastructure is counterproductive and worsens the challenges already facing the country.

He urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and seek peaceful, legal avenues for conflict resolution.

“Our democracy provides mechanisms for addressing disputes through the judiciary, legislature, and regulatory bodies. It is crucial to utilize these channels to ensure justice and prevent such incidents from recurring,” he added.

The minister also called on the Nigerian Air Force to uphold professionalism and ensure that its operations respect civilian welfare and public infrastructure.

He reaffirmed the military’s vital role in national security but emphasized that its actions must align with democratic principles and the rule of law.

Commending the resilience of Ikeja DisCo staff in the face of adversity, Adelabu assured them of the Ministry of Power’s support in restoring normalcy.

He further urged stakeholders in the power sector to foster collaboration rather than conflict, emphasizing that overcoming challenges requires unity and collective commitment.

The minister also called on Nigerians to reject violence and embrace dialogue, stressing that the country can only achieve lasting progress through peaceful and constructive engagement.
