IHVN staff member found dead in Abuja hotel room

A staff member of the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), Meshach Thomas Panwal, was discovered dead in his hotel room at Grand Pella Hotel, Durumi, Abuja, on March 7, 2025.

Panwal had checked into Room 224 with colleagues attending a seminar.

His body was found around noon by his associates, who immediately alerted the hotel’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), Orlando Okpete.

The matter was then reported to the Durumi Police Division.

Upon arrival, police investigators conducted an initial assessment of the scene but found no signs of violence.

Items recovered from the room included a leather bag from H-Medix containing various medications, an Omron blood pressure monitor, and other personal belongings.

Sources disclosed that Panwal had complained of a headache the day before and had sought medical attention before returning to his room.

His death has been categorized as a case of Sudden and Unnatural Death (SUD) pending medical examination.

His body was transported to the Federal Medical Center, Jabi, and his brother, Joseph Panwal, an official at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), was informed.

The family, not suspecting any foul play, requested the release of the remains for burial, a request that was approved.
