Fubara: Group calls for Asari Dokubo’s arrest over alleged threats to disrupt oil production

The Rivers Restoration Movement (RRM) has called on the federal government to arrest Ijaw leaders accused of making threats to disrupt oil production if Governor Siminalayi Fubara is impeached.

In a statement issued on Friday, the group’s Director-General, Johnson Georgewill, specifically mentioned former militant leader Asari Dokubo, Ijaw National Congress President Benjamin Okaba, and Pan Niger Delta Forum National Publicity Secretary Anabs Sara-Igbe as individuals who have allegedly made inflammatory remarks that could threaten national security.

Georgewill condemned their statements as reckless and provocative, warning that such threats pose a danger to the country’s stability and economic interests.

“We urge security agencies to take immediate action by arresting Dokubo, Okaba, Sara-Igbe, and any other individuals or groups issuing threats against the Nigerian state, its economy, or its people,” he said.

He further emphasized that Nigeria operates under a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law. According to him, the Supreme Court has already made its ruling, and Governor Fubara is obligated to abide by it.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Police Commissioner Olugbenga Adepoju acknowledged awareness of the threats and assured the public that security forces were monitoring the situation.

The Niger Delta Rescue Movement, a militant group, had previously threatened to target oil installations in protest over the alleged withholding of Rivers State’s federal allocation.

The group also issued a warning to non-indigenes, advising them to leave the state, claiming an escalation of hostilities was imminent.

Responding to these developments, Adepoju reassured residents that law enforcement agencies were prepared to handle any disturbances.

“We are taking a strategic approach to addressing these threats. No one has a monopoly on violence, and the police command is fully prepared to respond to any situation,” he stated.

He urged the public to remain calm and continue with their daily activities, assuring them that their safety remains a top priority.
