FCT police arrest 73 suspects in raid on criminal hideouts

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested 73 individuals during a series of raids targeting criminal hideouts in the Maitama, Kurudu, Galadima, and Karmo districts.

According to intelligence sources cited by Zagazola Makama, the operation took place late Thursday night and was carried out by officers from the Anti-Narcotic Unit in collaboration with divisional commands.

“During the raid, security personnel searched several uncompleted buildings and locations known for criminal activities, leading to the arrest of 73 suspects.

“Officers also recovered a stash of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp, along with other illicit substances,” a source disclosed.

The detained individuals are currently undergoing screening and interrogation at different police divisions, with those found culpable set to face legal action.

Reports suggest that the illicit drug trade remains a major security threat in Abuja, with several locations operating as long-established hubs.

“The Nyanya night market and Karu Abattoir are among the most notorious spots for drug-related activities, while other high-risk areas include Pipeline Junction at Gbazango Extension, Kukwaba by 37th Road, Tipper Garage, and Gidan Dambe along Biyaji Road, where drug transactions are openly conducted.

Investigations indicate that a significant portion of the drug supply in the FCT originates from Kano and parts of the southwest, with additional supply chains from Dei-Dei town in Abuja and Tafa in Kaduna State.

Dagba, a well-known drug hub near Durumi, remains a hotspot for illicit trade, while “Torobola” Hill, located near Apo Roundabout and linking Asokoro to Guzape District, is another key distribution centre.

Security sources have also uncovered that drug trafficking networks utilize power bikes, commercial vehicles, and motorcycle delivery services to distribute illicit substances.

Disturbingly, some corrupt security personnel are allegedly complicit in the trade, either turning a blind eye or benefitting financially.

In response, security analysts have called for intensified efforts by the police and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to dismantle these criminal networks.

They also stressed the need for stricter regulations on logistics companies suspected of aiding drug distribution within the FCT.
