Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed speculation that he is considering leaving the party for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Addressing the rumors, Atiku’s special adviser on broadcast media, Abdulrasheed Shehu, took to X (formerly Twitter) to refute the claims.
“Disregard the misinformation! Atiku Abubakar has neither joined nor is joining the SDP. This baseless speculation is a deliberate attempt to mislead,” Shehu stated.
The speculation emerged amid reports of Atiku’s increasing political interactions with former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
Some sources suggested that both politicians, along with their associates, might be exploring new political alignments due to ongoing challenges within their respective parties.
El-Rufai, who has recently distanced himself from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, has voiced dissatisfaction with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He previously stated that while he might leave the APC if it strays too far from its founding principles, he would not consider joining the PDP.
This development has fueled speculation that the SDP could serve as an alternative political platform for Atiku and El-Rufai, especially as the PDP continues to grapple with internal leadership disputes.
