Crisis rocks PDP’s Anambra primary as aspirants shun N40m forms

Must read

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has concluded the sale of its N40 million expression of interest and nomination forms for the Anambra governorship election, yet no aspirant has stepped forward to purchase them.

The party had initially set the sales period between February 24 and March 5, with March 7 as the deadline for submission.

The primary election is scheduled for April 5, followed by an appeal committee sitting on April 8.

However, a PDP insider, speaking anonymously to The PUNCH, disclosed that the absence of aspirants is linked to the party’s deepening internal crisis.

The source revealed that the ongoing leadership tussle has made aspirants reluctant to invest in the platform.

“As of now, no one has obtained the PDP’s Anambra governorship nomination forms due to concerns about the party’s instability.

“The leadership struggles have significantly weakened confidence at all levels,” the source stated.

The crisis, which affects the state, zonal, and national levels, has raised doubts about the party’s ability to conduct a transparent primary election.

In response, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) has adjusted the election timetable, extending the deadline for purchasing nomination forms to March 10 in an effort to encourage participation.

A party official confirmed the extension, adding that a stakeholders’ meeting with the NWC has been scheduled for March 10 at the PDP national headquarters in Abuja.

The PDP’s troubles have intensified due to a legal battle over the position of National Secretary, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu and former National Youth Leader Sunday Ude-Okoye locked in a dispute.

The case is expected to be heard at the Supreme Court on March 10.

Further complicating matters, the party remains divided over a controversial South-South zonal congress held on February 22, which reportedly took place without the approval of PDP governors.

This has exacerbated tensions within the party’s Board of Trustees, National Working Committee, and National Executive Committee.

Despite acknowledging the party’s internal challenges, PDP National Deputy Legal Adviser Okechukwu Osuoha expressed confidence in the party’s prospects.

“I am not surprised by the situation, but the National Organising Secretary has set the process in motion for the election,” Osuoha said.

He admitted that factional disputes and litigation have deterred aspirants but insisted that the PDP remains a strong political force.

On the other hand, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor attributed aspirants’ reluctance to widespread disillusionment with Nigeria’s electoral system.

“People no longer want to spend millions on elections where results can be overturned by political interference. There is a loss of faith in the credibility of the process,” Osadolor remarked.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the Anambra governorship election will take place on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
