Civil society groups staged a protest at the National Assembly gate on Wednesday, calling for Senate President Godswill Akpabio to resign amid allegations raised by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Demonstrators arrived as early as 8 a.m., just before the Senate’s plenary session, carrying banners with messages like “Akpabio Must Go” and “Protect Women’s Rights.”
The controversy stems from Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent claims that Akpabio targeted her after she rejected his alleged sexual advances.
She made the accusations during a live television interview, further fueling tensions within the Senate.
The dispute originally gained attention after a change in Senate seating arrangements on February 20, which Akpoti-Uduaghan said was part of a broader effort to sideline her.
Protesters insist that Akpabio should step down to allow an independent investigation into the allegations.
