Seven suspects deny involvement in Kwara student’s murder

Seven individuals accused of the murder of Mojisola Awesu, a final-year student at Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa, have pleaded not guilty before Justice Ibrahim Yusuf at the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin.

The defendants face a six-count charge, including conspiracy, murder, evidence destruction, and unlawful disposal of a body.

Among those standing trial are Happiness Adebayo and Timileyin Kolawole, identified as key suspects in the incident, which occurred on August 9, 2024.

Additionally, Happiness’ parents, Adebayo Adeniyi and Bukola Adeniyi, are accused of tampering with evidence, while three hotel employees—Adeoye Adeola, Lawal Aminat, and Peter Bulus—allegedly conspired to dispose of the victim’s remains along Warah Road, Ilorin.

The charges stem from the Penal Code Law of Kwara State, 2006, and the Kwara State Prohibition of Dealing in Human Parts Law, 2018.

During the court session on Tuesday, the Kwara State Director of Public Prosecutions, Ayoola Akande, signaled the readiness of the prosecution to commence trial.

However, the defense requested more time, arguing that the session was for arraignment, not trial proceedings.

Justice Yusuf stressed the importance of a speedy trial, stating, “This is a serious criminal case involving the loss of life, and unnecessary delays should be avoided.”

The case has been adjourned to March 12, 2025, for the hearing, with all defendants remaining in custody until then.
