Rivers Assembly summons RSIEC chairman over 2024 LG elections

The Rivers State House of Assembly has directed the Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.), to appear before it within 48 hours to address concerns regarding the conduct of the 2024 local government elections.

During a plenary session on Wednesday, Speaker Martin Amaewhule, who presided over the sitting, warned that if Justice Enebeli failed to comply, the Assembly would issue a warrant for his arrest.

Additionally, the lawmakers resolved to formally request Governor Siminalayi Fubara to submit the names of commissioners who had not undergone screening by the Assembly led by Amaewhule.

Meanwhile, RSIEC has set August 9, 2025, as the date for fresh local government elections in Rivers State.

The commission’s chairman, Justice Enebeli, announced this during a stakeholders’ meeting at RSIEC’s headquarters on Aba Road, Port Harcourt, where he also unveiled the timetable and guidelines for the upcoming polls.

Speaking at the event, Enebeli reaffirmed the commission’s dedication to ensuring a transparent, credible, and impartial electoral process. He urged political parties to strictly adhere to the electoral regulations.

The decision to conduct fresh elections follows last Friday’s Supreme Court ruling, which nullified the tenure of the 23 local government chairmen in the state.

The court cited a violation of Section 150 of the Electoral Act and declared the elections held on October 5, 2024, invalid.
