Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have dismissed reports that they held a reconciliation meeting with Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Obasa was reinstated on Monday, March 3, 2025, following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda under pressure from party leaders and other stakeholders.
However, a report on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, suggested that the Speaker had met with lawmakers in an attempt to mend fences.
Contrary to this claim, some lawmakers who attended the gathering insisted that the meeting was not about reconciliation.
According to them, the brief session did not address any issues related to resolving past conflicts.
“One of the key reasons for his removal repeated itself. The meeting was scheduled for 1 p.m. but didn’t start until 2:30 p.m., and there was no apology for the delay. He merely acknowledged that we were still unhappy with the way he was reinstated and proceeded straight to the agenda. None of us contributed to the discussion,” a lawmaker revealed.
Another House member confirmed that while a meeting did take place, its purpose was to brief them on a case filed against them by the suspended Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko.
“The case is coming up on Thursday. Though it is a civil matter, we were concerned that he involved the Department of State Services (DSS), leading to the invitation and arrest of some of our colleagues. Apart from this, nothing significant happened. The meeting was brief, and we left immediately after,” the lawmaker stated.
He further disclosed that Obasa’s reinstatement was not a unanimous decision by the lawmakers but was influenced by respected party elders, including Baba Bisi Akande and Aremo Olusegun Osoba.
“Deep down, we still do not want him in that position. There is widespread discontent within the Assembly, and the legislature may struggle to function as it once did. We are still waiting for him to step down in line with the agreement reached with the Baba Akande-led committee, so the House can continue enjoying the peace and progress it had before his return,” the lawmaker added.
