PSC appoints six Deputy Inspector Generals, promotes senior officers

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of six Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) of Police, alongside several promotions within the force.

The newly appointed DIGs include Sadiq Abubakar, Commandant of the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano; Benjamin Okolo, formerly the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in charge of Information Communication Technology at Force Headquarters, Abuja; and Williams Adebowale, Commandant of the Police Staff College, Jos. Others are Bzigu Bali, AIG at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Enugu; Idegwu Basil Ukuoma, AIG Zone 14, Katsina; and Adebola Ayinde Hamzat, AIG Zone 16, Yenagoa.

PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani announced the appointments in a statement released on Tuesday, also revealing the promotion of the Commissioner of Police for Enugu State, Kanayo Uzuegbu, to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police.

Before his promotion, Uzuegbu had served in various capacities, including as Assistant Commissioner of Operations in Zone 9, Umuahia; Area Commander in both Owerri and Karu, Nasarawa State; and as Commander of Operation Switch in Port Harcourt.

He also held administrative roles as Deputy Commissioner of Finance and Administration in Edo State, Deputy Commissioner of State CID in Osun State, and Commissioner of Police for Operations and Communication at Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Additionally, the commission approved the appointment of new Commissioners of Police (CPs) for Oyo and Enugu State Commands.

CP Ademola Johnson, who previously served as Principal Staff Officer to the Inspector General of Police and Deputy Commissioner in Delta State Command, was assigned to Oyo State.

Meanwhile, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa was appointed to lead the Enugu State Command, succeeding newly promoted AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu.

Giwa had previously held key positions, including Deputy Commissioner of Operations in Kaduna and Imo State Commands, as well as roles in the Police Mobile Force at Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The PSC also elevated eight Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) to the rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs).

The officers promoted include Abdullahi Kamba Usman, Sani Abdu, Ifeanyi Owo, Vincent Orole, Elisha Atikinkpan, and Margaret Okonkwo, along with Alhasan Aliyu Guga and Imo Owinizi Ezekiel.

Their promotions followed written examinations and interactive oral interviews.

Retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, urged the newly appointed DIGs to work closely with the Inspector General of Police to enhance the security framework of the country and maintain law and order.
