Labour Party dismisses merger talks, warns NLC against interference

Must read

The Labour Party (LP) has ruled out the possibility of merging with any political group, asserting that such an option is not on its agenda.

This was stated by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in a press release on Monday in Abuja.

His response follows the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)’s call for rebranding, which included suggestions for a possible merger or coalition.

Ifoh cautioned the NLC leadership against interfering in the party’s affairs and attempting to make decisions on its behalf.

His remarks were in reaction to a communique issued by NLC President Joe Ajaero after the union’s National Executive Council meeting in Yola, Adamawa State.

The NLC had stressed the need to reclaim the Labour Party and restore its ideological foundation.

The labour union instructed its National Administrative Council to take swift action in restructuring the party, including considering a merger or alliance with like-minded parties.

This, it said, would safeguard the interests of both the Labour Party and Nigerian workers.

However, in his response, Ifoh reiterated that while LP is open to collaborations that could enhance its prospects in future elections, merging with another party is not currently under consideration.

The NLC has yet to acknowledge Julius Abure’s leadership as the LP’s National Chairman following his re-election at a convention held in Anambra last year.
