Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has placed an immediate ban on protests and other activities within court premises across the state.
The announcement was made in a statement on Tuesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, in Makurdi.
According to the statement, the only exception to the ban is the local election petition tribunal sittings, given their time-sensitive nature.
Governor Alia noted that court premises in the state have remained closed since December 6, 2024, due to the ongoing strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).
He stated, “As a result, all individuals and groups are advised to avoid any form of activity within or around the court premises until further notice. While election petition tribunals are utilizing some court halls for their proceedings, only these tribunals will be granted access due to the urgency of their cases.”
The governor further emphasized that security measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of tribunal members, legal representatives, witnesses, and other stakeholders.
He declared a total ban on protests, unauthorized gatherings, and commercial activities such as hawking around the court premises, warning that violators would face legal action.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, Governor Alia assured the public that tribunal proceedings would continue in a peaceful and orderly manner.
He urged residents to remain patient while awaiting the tribunal’s verdicts.
The governor also highlighted the progress made in maintaining security across Benue State since he assumed office, while acknowledging existing challenges.
He reassured the people of his administration’s dedication to enhancing safety and ensuring a peaceful environment for all.
