Nigeria begins Ramadan fasting today – Sultan

The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Dr. Sa’ad Abubakar III, has announced that Ramadan fasting will commence in Nigeria on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

In a nationwide broadcast on Friday, the Sultan confirmed the sighting of the new moon of Ramadan in several parts of the country. Reports from Muslim leaders and organisations were carefully verified by the National Moon Sighting Committee, alongside state committees, before the official declaration was made.

“With the sighting of the new crescent and the conclusion of Sha’aban 1446 AH, fasting is set to begin on Saturday, March 1, in accordance with Islamic teachings,” he stated.

He urged Muslims to devote themselves to worship throughout the holy month and to offer prayers for peace and national unity.

He also called on the wealthy to support the less privileged and stressed the need for religious tolerance and harmony in the country.

The Sultan prayed for divine guidance for the nation’s leaders as they strive to fulfill their responsibilities.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a sacred period during which adult Muslims observe fasting from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations as an act of devotion to Allah.
