The Supreme Court has nullified the Rivers State Local Government elections conducted on October 5, 2024.
Delivering the ruling on Friday, a five-member panel led by Justice Jamilu Tukur declared the election null and void, overturning the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal, which had dismissed the case on jurisdictional grounds.
With this judgment, the Supreme Court reinstated the ruling of the Federal High Court.
Previously, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja had issued an order preventing the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission from proceeding with the polls.
He cited the need for an updated voter register before the elections could take place.
The court had also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide the updated voter register to the state electoral commission to ensure a proper electoral process.
Additionally, security agencies, including the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), were barred from offering security during the elections.
