Lagos Speaker, Meranda condemns Obasa’s actions, calls it ‘disgraceful display’

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has strongly criticized the recent actions of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, describing them as a “disgraceful display” following the disruption at the Assembly complex on Thursday.

Reports indicate that Obasa, accompanied by his security personnel, forcefully entered the Speaker’s office and later convened a four-member parliamentary session, despite ongoing legal proceedings challenging his removal.

Speaking to journalists after a court hearing at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Friday, Meranda emphasized that the legal process had only just begun and urged all parties to allow their legal teams to handle the matter.

“This is just the beginning. Both parties have legal representation, and we should let them do their job,” she stated.

Addressing Obasa’s unexpected appearance at the Assembly, Meranda acknowledged his right to visit as a sitting member but condemned his intrusion into her office.

“He remains a member of the House of Assembly, so he has every right to be there, but forcefully breaking into my office is completely unacceptable,” she said.

She also dismissed Obasa’s session with four lawmakers as a mere spectacle, stating, “A proper quorum is required for legislative proceedings. Sitting with just three or four members is nothing but theatrics.”

Meranda further revealed that while some of her security details had been reinstated, they were far fewer than usual.

“Normally, my convoy includes 12 police officers, four DSS operatives, and two anti-bomb units. But today, I have only three or four policemen,” she noted.

The Assembly’s spokesperson, Olukayode Ogundipe, also weighed in after the court proceedings, describing the events as a “shameful spectacle.”

“We all saw what happened—it was disgraceful. Even in court, his lawyers were putting on a show. But when we get to the bridge, we will cross it,”
