Kwara court advocates Shariah adoption in southwest

Justice Abdur-Raheem Ahmad Sayi, Qadi of the Kwara State Shariah Court, has urged Southwest Nigeria to implement Shariah law in family and commercial affairs.

He made this appeal during the 30th Pre-Ramadan Lecture organized by the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA), themed “Transformative Power of Ramadan.”

Justice Sayi argued that the current legal system in the region does not adequately serve Muslims in matters of family and commerce. “The most vital aspect of private law is family law, which must be legally protected,” he stated.

“Governments in Southwest Nigeria should adopt Shariah law in these areas to ensure justice and fairness for all.”

Also speaking at the event, Prof. Moshood Baderin emphasized that Islam is a comprehensive way of life, balancing faith and humanity.

“Islam is often misunderstood as being solely about spirituality, but it integrates every aspect of human life,” he explained.

He highlighted how the five pillars of Islam shape human interactions, saying, “The Shahada is not just a declaration of faith but a commitment to serving humanity.”

Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat delivered a keynote address, commending UMA for sustaining the lecture series for three decades.

He highlighted the significance of Ramadan in fostering personal and societal transformation and urged Muslims to embrace charity.

“Ramadan is more than fasting; it’s a time to purify the soul, practice self-discipline, and extend kindness to those in need,” he said.

Dr Hamzat also cautioned against the risks of Artificial Intelligence (AI), urging Muslim parents to safeguard their children from its influence.

Additionally, he expressed concern over the growing trend of men neglecting their responsibilities, leaving women to singlehandedly raise children.

Representing the University of Lagos Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bolanle Oboh praised UMA for its consistent efforts in promoting Islamic education.

She noted that this year’s Ramadan coincides with the Christian Lent season, making it a unique period of spiritual reflection.

UMA President Abdulmumin Alao highlighted the association’s ongoing initiatives, particularly its scholarship program supporting indigent Muslim postgraduate students pursuing academic careers.

Following his remarks, distinguished guests, including Senator Idiat Oluranti Adebule and Ogun State Deputy Governor Engr. Naimot Salako Oyedele made significant financial contributions to the scholarship fund.

The event also featured an awards ceremony recognizing prominent Islamic scholars and leaders, such as Sheikh Jubril Ramadan, Sheikh Abdurrahman Ahmad, and Prof. Moshood A. Baderin, for their contributions to the growth of Islam in Nigeria.
