Court dissolves one-year marriage over neglect, abandonment

The Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja has officially ended the marriage between Hauwa Abdulhadi and Ismail Hassan, citing neglect and abandonment.

Presiding over the case, Judge Aliyu Kagarko ruled that the marriage had irretrievably broken down. He granted the divorce after both parties expressed their willingness to end the union.

As part of the ruling, Ms. Abdulhadi was instructed to observe the mandatory three-month “Iddah” period before entering into another marriage.

In her petition, Ms. Abdulhadi stated that she married Mr. Hassan under Islamic law in 2024 but lived with him for only nine weeks before he abandoned her at her parents’ home.

She accused him of failing to provide for her basic needs, leaving her without food, income, or any form of support.

She told the court that she could no longer endure the situation, saying, “My husband no longer loves me. I want the court to dissolve this marriage.”

Mr. Hassan did not contest the allegations or object to the divorce request.
