Ramadan: KEDCO assures stable power supply in Kano, Katsina, Jigawa

The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has promised uninterrupted power supply to residents of Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States throughout the Ramadan period.

Managing Director Yusuf Abubakar made this commitment during a town hall meeting with customers and stakeholders in Katsina on Wednesday.

The meeting, which focused on customer rights, responsibilities, and operational challenges, provided a platform for engagement between KEDCO and its consumers.

Represented by KEDCO’s Regional Head, Nasiru Dembo, Abubakar emphasized that a stable power supply depends on customers fulfilling their obligations, particularly the timely payment of electricity bills.

He revealed that the company is actively engaging stakeholders in Abuja to secure adequate power supply during Ramadan.

“The purpose of this meeting is to encourage bill payment and ensure an improved electricity supply to communities,” he stated.

He noted that KEDCO is facing financial difficulties, with losses exceeding N250 million monthly in the Katsina North region alone. The company also struggles with infrastructure vandalism, including the destruction of transformers, cables, and transformer oil theft.

Abubakar urged communities to help protect electricity infrastructure, explaining that replacing vandalized transformers takes time, which results in prolonged outages. He also acknowledged the increased power demand during the fasting period, particularly in hot weather.

“The electricity we receive is allocated based on demand across our coverage areas,” he explained.

Additionally, he encouraged customers to switch off unnecessary appliances during the day to conserve energy and reduce costs.

KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala, highlighted that the meeting was an opportunity to gather feedback from customers.

He assured that the company would continue engaging with consumers and strengthening its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

He also disclosed that KEDCO issues electricity bills amounting to N12 billion monthly across the three states but often recovers less than N6 billion in payments, a major challenge affecting service delivery.
