Police escort withdrawal from Meranda fuels Obasa’s return as Lagos speaker

Must read

Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was removed from his position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, is on track to reclaim the role.

According to sources, Obasa’s security detail has been restored, while those assigned to Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda—his former deputy and current Speaker—have been withdrawn.

Meranda, who made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly following Obasa’s impeachment, has not formally resigned.

However, her fate was reportedly sealed over the weekend after senior members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) intervened in the leadership crisis.

Key figures involved in brokering the resolution included former APC National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, ex-Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and several lawmakers.

During the deliberations, Meranda was allegedly asked to step aside, paving the way for Obasa’s return.

A source familiar with the discussions told Daily Trust, “They stated that Obasa’s removal was unlawful, and the lawmakers were instructed to reinstate him.”

It remains uncertain when the House will reconvene to finalize the leadership transition.

Two weeks ago, Meranda had indefinitely suspended plenary sessions following a disruption in the Assembly, triggered by an incursion from Department of State Services (DSS) operatives.
