A Lagos-based businessman and Labour Party (LP) chieftain, Mr. Akinbola Tunde, has raised concerns over alleged political persecution, intimidation, and threats to his life.
Akinbola, who played a crucial role in mobilizing grassroots support for the LP during the 2023 general elections, claimed he has faced continuous harassment since the polls, including physical attacks and a violent home invasion.
Recalling a frightening incident on March 4, 2023, he said that while attending a wedding in Ondo State, he received a distress call from his housemaid, Miss Adeoti Rachael.
“She informed me that armed political thugs had broken into my home, shouting my name as they searched for me. When they couldn’t find me, they vandalized my property and assaulted her so severely that she required hospitalization at Pillars Medical Centre,” he recounted.
He further alleged that on December 12, 2022, while returning from a Labour Party campaign event in Alimosho, Lagos, he was ambushed by armed thugs.
“They attacked me, and in my attempt to escape, I sustained a serious knee injury that took six weeks to heal,” he stated.
Despite reporting these incidents to law enforcement, Akinbola expressed frustration over the lack of action. “The attackers continue to operate without consequence. The police have not taken any steps, leaving my family and me in constant fear,” he lamented.
With the 2025 local government elections approaching, he noted that the threats against him have escalated, raising concerns about his ability to continue participating in politics.
He called on the Federal Government, security agencies, human rights organizations, and the international community to intervene and ensure his safety.
“I refuse to be silenced by intimidation. My only desire is to contribute to the progress of my country in an environment where democracy, justice, and freedom of speech are upheld,” he stated.
Akinbola urged security agencies to take urgent action to protect him and hold those responsible for the attacks accountable.
