Lekki land dispute: Doctor demand govt intervention over alleged illegal takeover

Must read

A medical doctor and international consultant, Dr. Ojo Oluwatosin, has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, the state’s Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro (SAN), and the Inspector General of Police to intervene in an alleged unlawful attempt to seize his property in Lekki Phase 1.

Dr. Oluwatosin, who had planned to establish a world-class specialist hospital for the benefit of Lagos residents, expressed concern that his investment and personal safety were at risk due to the actions of suspected land grabbers.

According to him, he legally acquired the land on Admiralty Road, Lekki Phase 1, from Churchgate Nigeria Ltd in 2020. He further ensured all necessary documentation, including the governor’s consent and registration at the Lagos State Bureau of Lands.

Speaking through his lawyer, Ayodele Osanyinlusi, Dr. Oluwatosin revealed that he had obtained the required approvals from the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPA). Additionally, the land has a valid Certificate of Occupancy dated January 16, 1990.

Osanyinlusi stated that trouble began in 2023 when construction on the hospital site commenced. About 15 armed individuals, accompanied by suspected thugs, reportedly invaded the property, forcibly ejecting workers while claiming to be members of the Lagos State Task Force.

However, investigations later revealed that they had no official backing.

Despite interventions from the Maroko Police Division and legal directives, including an order from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in August and December 2024, the harassment allegedly continued.

The invaders reportedly returned to the site, damaged property, and made away with construction materials valued at over N30 million.

The matter was later taken to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Alagbon. However, Osanyinlusi alleged that the suspected land grabbers, boasting of strong political connections, manipulated the situation, leading to the case being transferred to FCID Abuja, where the doctor’s lawyer, Ademola Ekundayo, was arrested.

Following these developments, Dr. Oluwatosin petitioned the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Zone 2, prompting fresh investigations and legal action at the Lagos State High Court.

The court, presided over by Justice A. Idowu, issued an interlocutory injunction preventing Starmark Finance Company Ltd and its associates from trespassing on the land.

Despite the court’s ruling and legal directives for prosecution, Osanyinlusi claimed that the alleged perpetrators continued their attempts to seize the property and were even forging documents to resell the land.

Describing the situation as an abuse of power, he urged President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sanwo-Olu, Attorney-General Pedro, and the IGP to intervene and ensure the protection of Dr. Oluwatosin’s investment and personal safety.
