Two farmers killed in Edo as police confirm attack by suspected herdsmen

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of two farmers in Okpekpe, Etsako East Local Government Area, by individuals suspected to be herdsmen.

The victims, identified as Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello, were reportedly ambushed on their way to the farm on Monday.

CSP Moses Yamu, the command’s spokesperson, stated that the attack was reported by the Chief of Okpekpe around 9:00 a.m. on Monday.

“The command received information this morning at approximately 0900 hours from the Chief of Okpekpe that two of his subjects had been attacked and killed on their farms by suspected herdsmen,” Yamu said.

According to him, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and mobile police officers stationed in Uzanu were immediately deployed to the scene, where they discovered the victims’ lifeless bodies.

In response to the killings, Yamu noted that security strategies in the area had been reassessed to track down those responsible and prevent future attacks.

“Security measures have been strengthened to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent a recurrence,” he added.

The incident follows a deadly attack just three days earlier, in which 23 farmers were reportedly killed in seven farming settlements within Ovia South West Local Government Area.

These repeated attacks have raised concerns over escalating insecurity in rural communities, particularly in farming areas where residents continue to face violent threats.
