Tenant mercilessly beat landlord over unpaid rent in Abuja

A heated altercation broke out between a landlord, Samson Bako, and his tenant, Musa Alhassan, in Pegi community, Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following a dispute over unpaid rent.

According to a resident, Ishaku Ayuba, the incident occurred after the landlord took action by locking the tenant’s room due to his failure to settle outstanding rent.

Alhassan, a commercial driver who has been living in the compound for three years, reportedly owed a full year’s rent but had refused to make payments despite several reminders.

The landlord’s son, responsible for rent collection, had repeatedly asked him to pay, but the tenant allegedly ignored the requests.

“The man has been owing since last year when his rent expired,” Ayuba stated. “The landlord became furious after the tenant insulted his son.

While the tenant was away at work, the landlord locked his room with a new padlock.”

Upon returning home and realizing his room was locked, the tenant inquired from other occupants and was informed that the landlord was responsible.

Enraged, he allegedly attempted to slap the landlord’s son, which escalated into a serious confrontation. In the ensuing altercation, the tenant reportedly assaulted the landlord.

The situation prompted other residents to alert local vigilantes, who arrived at the scene to intervene and later took the tenant into custody.

A vigilante member, identified as Joshua, confirmed the incident, stating that the tenant was handed over to security personnel for further action.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the FCT police command, SP Josephine Adeh, for comments were unsuccessful, as she neither answered calls nor responded to text messages at the time of reporting.
