Herbalist jailed 14 years for attempted sexual assault on epileptic girl

An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sentenced Segun Shina, a herbalist, to 14 years in prison on Tuesday for attempting to sexually assault a 10-year-old girl with epilepsy.

Justice Rahman Oshodi delivered the verdict after Shina, in a plea deal, switched his plea to guilty on a revised charge of attempted sexual assault.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) notes that Shina’s guilty plea followed negotiations, overturning his initial not-guilty stance.

Oshodi affirmed the evidence and plea confirmed Shina’s crime, exploiting a vulnerable child seeking treatment.

“You abused the trust of a girl who came to you for healing,” the judge stated, sentencing him to 14 years from his arrest date, November 16, 2018.

Shina’s family was tasked with his rehabilitation post-release, and he was barred from contacting the victim’s family, with his name added to the sex offender registry.

Initially charged with defilement in 2021, the case shifted after testimony from the girl’s mother and police revealed his betrayal.
