Customs nullifies import declarations after suspension of FOB charge

Must read

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has revoked import declarations following the suspension of the four per cent free-on-board (FOB) charge on imports.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada confirmed that all import declarations made during the initial enforcement of the charge had been cancelled.

The NCS had initially imposed the four per cent charge, calculated based on the value of imported goods, including transportation costs up to the port of loading.

However, after widespread criticism from industry experts and stakeholders, who warned of potential economic strain and rising inflation, the charge was suspended on February 11.

Maiwada explained that the annulment of declarations was necessary to maintain uniformity in customs procedures and prevent disruptions in the clearance process.

“Affected importers, customs agents, and stakeholders are required to reprocess their declarations to facilitate the clearance of their goods,” he stated.

He urged stakeholders to promptly update their entries through designated customs platforms, assuring them that necessary measures were in place to ensure a smooth transition. Additionally, customs commands across the country have been instructed to assist importers and agents in navigating the process.

Reaffirming the agency’s commitment to implementing government fiscal policies under the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, Maiwada emphasized the importance of continuous engagement with stakeholders.

He also highlighted that under the leadership of Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, the NCS remains dedicated to transparency and efficiency in service delivery.

Traders were encouraged to take advantage of the revised process to avoid delays in clearing their consignments.
