JTF shooting kills student, ignites protest in Katsina LG

A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday when operatives of the Joint Task Force (JTF) opened fire on a motorcycle rider and his passenger, a 400-level student from the Federal University Dutsin-Ma, in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina state.

The student succumbed to gunshot wounds shortly after, triggering widespread unrest in the town.

Bakatsine, a security analyst in Northern Nigeria, broke the news on his Twitter page, describing the shooting as “reckless” and a “gross overreach” by the JTF.

In a video shared by Bakatsine on Twitter and seen by AFRIPOST, eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred on Sunday evening around 4:30 PM, along a busy stretch near the university.

“The JTF just started shooting without warning,” said Musa Abdullahi, a local shopkeeper. “The student was hit and fell right there—it was chaos.”

The student’s death has fueled outrage, with peers taking to the streets in an ongoing protest, demanding justice.

“We won’t rest until those responsible are held accountable,” vowed Aisha Yusuf, a fellow student.

Security forces have cordoned off parts of Dutsin-Ma as tensions escalate.

Authorities have yet to comment officially, but Bakatsine warned, “This could spiral further if not addressed swiftly.”
