The management of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) in Katsina State has ordered the immediate closure of the institution following violent protests by students over the alleged killing of a colleague.
Reports indicate that two students were shot by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) operating in the area, resulting in the death of one.
A source in Katsina revealed that the students were mistakenly identified as bandit informants, leading to the shooting.
While one student died instantly, the other sustained a leg injury and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
In response to the incident, students took to the streets in Dutsin-Ma, setting vehicles on fire and vandalizing property.
Protesters also blocked the Dutsin-Ma–Katsina highway, burning tires and drawing the attention of security personnel. According to a local resident, military and police officers intervened peacefully, restoring order without the use of force.
Amid the unrest, the university’s Senate announced the immediate suspension of academic activities, declaring a one-week mid-semester break starting Monday, February 24, 2025.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Armaya’u Hamisu Bichi urged students to vacate the campus before 6:00 p.m. on the same day.
Meanwhile, Katsina State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, confirmed the incident and stated that an official statement would be released soon.
