Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, has refuted claims that he is pushing for an automatic nomination or preferential treatment within the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi’s media aide, Ibrahim Umar, addressed the matter while responding to remarks from LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh.
Ifoh had earlier dismissed suggestions that the party had already decided to field Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and other 2023 candidates in the next election.
The clarification comes after Abayomi Arabambi, spokesperson for a faction within the party, declared that Obi would be LP’s flagbearer to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
However, Ifoh rejected this assertion, emphasizing that only the Julius Abure-led leadership could determine the party’s candidates.
Reiterating Obi’s stance, Umar stated that the former governor remains committed to democratic principles and has never demanded special privileges.
“Peter Obi believes in fair competition and equal opportunities for all aspirants. He is not interested in an automatic ticket but rather in ensuring a transparent and democratic process,” Umar said.
He urged the public to disregard misleading claims, noting that Obi remains focused on governance, economic development, and social justice.
