The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong warning to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, advising him to suspend the upcoming local government elections due to serious security concerns.
In a statement released on Friday night, Police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that intelligence reports indicate plans by certain groups to incite violence and disrupt public peace if the elections proceed as scheduled.
According to the police, the security threats pose a significant risk to voters, election officials, and residents, making it imperative for the state government to reconsider its decision.
“The Nigeria Police Force has received credible intelligence indicating a high likelihood of violence and significant security threats should the planned Local Government elections proceed in Osun State. Reports from joint intelligence gathering reveal that various groups, including political elements, are mobilizing to instigate unrest, disrupt public peace, and undermine democratic order. Given this imminent threat, the NPF strongly advises the Osun State Government to suspend the elections in the interest of public safety and national stability.
“The Force has assessed the security landscape and determined that conducting elections under these volatile conditions could escalate into widespread unrest, endangering lives and property. While security agencies are fully prepared to take decisive action to prevent any breakdown of law and order, suspending the elections is the best course of action to prevent unnecessary confrontation and safeguard the democratic process.
“Beyond security concerns, it is also important to consider the legal implications. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has clarified the legal standing of local government administration in Osun State, referencing the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on February 10, 2025. This ruling effectively nullified a previous Federal High Court decision and suggests that the planned elections lack a firm legal foundation.
“In light of both the heightened security threats and existing legal complexities, the Nigeria Police Force urges the Osun State Government to reconsider and immediately suspend the elections. The NPF remains committed to maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and upholding Nigeria’s democratic processes in accordance with the law.
“We call on all stakeholders, including political parties, to exercise restraint and prioritize the well-being of citizens during this period.”
Despite the police warning, Governor Adeleke has maintained that the elections will proceed as planned. The polls, scheduled for February 22, are expected to take place across 30 local government areas and 323 wards in Osun State.
With tensions rising, it remains to be seen how the state government will respond to the security advisory and legal concerns raised by the authorities.
