Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has cast his vote in the ongoing local government elections, despite opposition from the federal government and security agencies.
In a post on his official Twitter page, Adeleke shared pictures of himself voting and reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots democracy.
“A few minutes ago, I carried out my democratic duty by casting my vote at my polling unit in Ede.
“I commend the good people of Osun for maintaining a peaceful and orderly atmosphere at polling units across the state and encourage everyone to exercise their democratic right,” he wrote.
The governor emphasized the significance of local government elections, stating, “Local government elections are the closest to the grassroots, and getting it right starts with electing the right leaders. Together, we will make Osun great.”
The elections, organized by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), are proceeding amid legal and security concerns.
The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, had earlier described the polls as unconstitutional, arguing that the tenure of local government officials sacked by the state government should last until October 2025.
The Nigeria Police Force had also advised against the election, citing security risks.
Despite these challenges, polling units across the state opened as scheduled, with reports of a peaceful voting process in many areas.
However, tensions remain high as political stakeholders and security agencies continue to monitor the situation.
Observers are closely watching the outcome of the election, which could set a precedent for local government administration in Osun and beyond.
