I didn’t want to offend anyone – Gasperini speaks on disrespecting Lookman

Must read

Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has sought to clear the air over his recent criticism of Ademola Lookman’s penalty-taking abilities, stating that his remarks were not meant to offend the Nigerian forward.

“Lookman felt offended, but I didn’t want to offend anyone,” Gasperini said on Thursday, following Atalanta’s Europa League clash against Club Brugge.

The Italian tactician had previously described Lookman as “the worst football penalty taker,” a statement that drew a sharp response from the player, who admitted he was offended by his coach’s assessment.

However, Gasperini has now softened his stance, praising Lookman’s impact in the same match in which he criticized him.

“He entered with a fantastic approach against Club Brugge,” Gasperini remarked, highlighting the winger’s positive influence in the game.

The Atalanta boss also left the door open for Lookman to take up penalty duties in the future, provided he works on improving his technique.

“If he starts training to improve on penalties… with his exceptional skills, Ademola can become our first penalty taker,” Gasperini added.

Lookman has been a key figure for Atalanta this season, and his coach’s latest comments suggest a potential shift in responsibilities for the Nigerian international.

Whether he steps up to become the club’s primary penalty taker or he leaves the club because of the negative statements remains to be seen.
