Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has criticized Peter Obi over his recent comments comparing Nigeria’s current state to the era of former military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida.
In a post on his X (Twitter) page, Omokri reacted to Obi’s claim that “Nigeria is worse off than it was during IBB’s era.”
He dismissed the statement, arguing that economic indicators prove otherwise. According to him, Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has grown from $56.7 billion in 1993 to nearly $400 billion today.
He also highlighted improvements in per capita income, inflation rates, and life expectancy.
Accusing Obi of making misleading statements in a bid to gain political favour ahead of the 2027 elections, Omokri alleged that the former Anambra governor was seeking endorsements from past leaders.
He also criticized Obi’s tenure in Anambra, claiming that poverty worsened under his administration while he failed to build infrastructure, including schools.
Omokri further dismissed Obi’s remarks on Nigeria’s electoral system, pointing out that leaders like former President Goodluck Jonathan had conceded defeat, proving that democracy has progressed.
Concluding his statement, Omokri maintained that “Nigeria has not remained static since 1993,” insisting that Obi’s claims do not reflect reality.
