The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has strongly criticized the former administration of Godwin Obaseki, accusing it of inflicting psychological harm on the people of Edo State and undermining the state’s traditional institutions.
In a congratulatory message delivered by Chief Stanley Osamwonyi, the Esere of Benin Kingdom, the monarch condemned Obaseki’s leadership for its disregard and disrespect toward traditional authorities.
Chief Stanley stated that Edo people were treated as if they were the targets of a personal vendetta.
Obaseki’s alleged disrespect for Edo’s traditional institutions
The Oba detailed how Obaseki’s government allegedly used its influence to create divisions between the state and the traditional institutions, thereby diminishing the role of traditional rulers and chiefs.
“The people of Edo State suffered severe psychological distress, while traditional institutions were insulted, weakened, and nearly dismantled,” the monarch stated.
He further alleged that the former administration deliberately attempted to suppress the Benin Traditional Council by stripping it of its entitlements.
Among the contentious actions was the revocation of the concession of Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre, which had previously been granted to Oba Ewuare II.
Praise for Okpebholo’s leadership
Expressing his support for the current governor, Monday Okpebholo, the Oba commended him for reversing some of Obaseki’s controversial policies and restoring the dignity of Edo’s traditional institutions.
He described Okpebholo’s leadership as a positive shift that has reinstated mutual respect between the government and traditional rulers, bringing relief to the people of Edo State.
