The Kogi State Social Democratic Party (SDP) gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Murtala Yakubu Ajaka, has strongly condemned what he described as legislative autocracy and misconduct by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
His criticism follows the recent altercation involving Senator Natasha Akpoti, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District.
Reacting to the incident, Ajaka emphasized that the legislative arm plays a crucial role in upholding democratic values such as inclusion and tolerance.
He decried any form of dictatorship within the Senate, warning that undemocratic actions and statements—such as those seen in the widely circulated video—damage the Senate’s reputation and reinforce public concerns over its independence under Akpabio’s leadership.
He further expressed concerns that Nigerians expect a Senate that is accountable and responsive to their needs.
However, when duly elected representatives are denied the opportunity to voice their constituents’ concerns due to insensitivity and authoritarianism, it poses a serious threat to the nation’s democracy.
Ajaka stated, “As a former governor, former minister, and now Senate President, Akpabio should possess the leadership skills and temperament necessary to foster unity among his colleagues, regardless of gender, background, or political affiliation. Unfortunately, his repeated attempts to intimidate Senator Natasha are unacceptable and must end.”
He called on the Senate to take decisive action by replacing Akpabio with a more competent and democratic leader.
According to him, the failure to uphold justice, fairness, and respect within the legislative body could endanger Nigeria’s democratic future.
Ajaka concluded by urging the Senate to focus on addressing citizens’ pressing needs rather than engaging in conflicts and distractions that undermine the core principles of democracy.
